Iwo Rutkiewicz

b. 1968, lives and works in Warszawa.
He studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław and at the de Ateliers foundation in Amsterdam. Rutkiewicz’s works – regardless of whether they are in the form of video, photograph, object or image on canvas – always come from a single image/picture. The material of his works can be both photos and videos found on the internet, objects of everyday use, as well as models built in the studio and photographed with a mobile phone. A common feature of his works is depriving the output elements of the meanings routinely attributed to them. He treats these elements as substance that can be given new and unexpected meanings. As a consequence, the border between the concepts of naturalness and artificiality can be drawn at any arbitrarily fixed point.
